Description

John Morgan arrived in New Zealand in 1833 as a missionary of the Church Missionary Society. He served in Kerikeri before assisting with the founding of nine new stations at Puriri in Thames (1833), Mangapouri in the Waipa (1834), Tauranga (1835) and Kaweranga in Thames (1837). He helped with the reformation of Rotorua station on Mokoia Island during the 'musket wars' of the 1830s, and in 1839 assisted with its removal to the mainland. He worked at Otawhao from 1841-1864. (1) The Church Missionary Society, which John Morgan represented in the Waikato, was unlike the London Missionary Society or any other denominational society. (2) It was loyal to the leadership of the bishops and the Book of Common Prayer and was a part of the Church of England that was itself established by law. Nevertheless, it was also a Society not entirely dominated by the clergy. It was 'the Church principle, not the high-Church principle' (3) that governed the Church Missionary Society and from its inception it emphasised the role of laymen and women in the missionary enterprise. These early decisions drew criticism from all sides. Non-Anglicans saw it as too much tied to the Church of England and the Establishment while Anglicans saw it as too free in terms of Church of England doctrine and practice. (4) The Society had chosen a difficult middle path and it was the determination not to act without informing the leaders of the Church of England that gave rise to the reporting letters that were sent by missionaries from all over the world. These letters form a unique history of early encounters between Western traditions and modes of thought and those whose cultures and traditions stemmed from quite different origins.
